Alyssa Heagy was a marketing intern at SEMGeeks and worked with the SEO and Social Media teams. She is going into her senior year at Rider University. See her thoughts on her SEMGeeks experience below!

At college, we learn only the basics of what to expect working in our career field. They only brush over how to really do your future job. College prepares students, but it is not hands-on. As a college student at Rider University majoring in International Business, Marketing, and Advertising with a Web Design minor, I have learned a considerable amount of everything to expect in my career field and what to do. But nothing compares to what I learned through my internships.

Semgeeks has been, by far, the best experience I have gained in my college career. At Semgeeks, I interned in the marketing department, where I learned about optimizing social media, search engine searches, emails, blogs, content, and websites. Digital marketing is where marketing is migrating to nowadays, and with technology advancements we are only travelling further in that direction.

As an intern, my experience was hands on, and I put what I learned in college to real use. I created content strategies and worked on different clients’ marketing. I got to create blogs, emails, social media posts, surveys, taglines, and website content. I learned how to run PPC campaigns. The team let me sit in on client calls and meetings almost every day. With them, I discussed client work and learned new techniques and skills. I also got to watch and attend a webinar to learn new trends in marketing. Some blogs that I wrote have been posted to websites, and it is a pleasure to see them. The marketing team helped me advance my skills and taught me so much.

Additionally, one of the best parts of my internship was getting to help with Semgeeks’ annual New Jersey Digital Marketing Conference. The conference was amazing, and all our hard work paid off. I assisted with ticket sales and email promotions and created social media posts to help promote the event. The conference was very insightful, providing digital tips and tricks for businesses to use in their marketing endeavors. It was also a great networking event, allowing me to talk to people from different companies that are in the same career field.

One of the aspects I love about Semgeeks is their location. Semgeeks is located in Belmar, New Jersey and the beach is right down the road. Driving into my internship every morning, I would drive past all the beaches and see the ocean and the beautiful morning. The office environment is great too. Their open office layout allows free flow of conversation and workflow. They had music playing everyday at work which allowed me to concentrate and focus on my work at hand, while also providing some fun to the work day. The agency’s team is friendly and helpful too; any questions I had got answered immediately. While I was there, they had a client bring the team ice cream. It was there that I saw how much we have helped the client and how rewarding the work at the agency is.

As I am going to be a senior this year at Rider University, I reflect on how much experience I have gained through this internship and how much it will help me in my career field. I have learned so much and can’t wait to see what my experience will lead me to. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to work at Semgeeks and learn so much. The skills and techniques I have learned will stick with me throughout my career.
